about

It’s tough publishing your own work. There are always countless errors arousing idealistic tendencies in your head, acting as roadblocks to the creative process, and an endless path of contradictory thinking – switchbacks on the mountain of self-possession. I’ve been “working on” several songs for the past year and a half, but due to inexperience or lack of skill with the instrument, with a piece of software, with knowledge of music production, or simply insufficient ear training, I just couldn’t seem to finish them. With an undergraduate degree of music production under my belt, the task seemed perfectly manageable, but as anyone taking steps into the scholarly pursuit of a subject, the more you research, the more you realize how little you knew in the first place, and how far you have to go.

This intentionally ordinary record is an attempt to shake out those mental tangles and keep writing, and more importantly, sharing. It is far from perfect, there are plenty of smears and smudges, which I hope only contributes to the listening being very raw and real. Nothing has been artificially looped, every note is played in the order you hear it, and post-production has been limited to increasing the volume through limiting and compression, with the tiniest dabs of reverb throughout. Created with a standard drum kit, a stratocaster, and three pedals: octave, chorus, and delay, this whole composition was made with deliberate aims toward innocence and honesty, and an aptitude for collaboration. There are several contributors for this project beyond the audio, some writing, some photography, some film, and as each pairing is completed it will be posted.

I set the price a $3 instead of free, as usual, due to the effort put into this. There may be only 26 minutes of material, but due to owning very minimal gear, it takes a surprising amount of energy to find inexpensive time in a studio, collaborate between international musicians, transport hand-me-down gear, and find unorthodox fixes for equipment insufficiencies. You can always stream for free, but in an attempt to improve on my quality of output, I decided to set a price on the work.

Thanks to everyone for your support and love over the years.
